Effective August 25, 2010, the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors repealed the county ordinance entitled County Vehicle Licenses and enacted an ordinance entitled County License Fee. A motor vehicle license fee (VLF) will be assessed each calendar year. The motor vehicle license fee will be assessed on each motor vehicle, trailer, and semi-trailer owned on January 1st for which a current state license plate is displayed. For calendar year 2011 and subsequent years, the vehicle license fee shall be due on December 5th of the preceding year and shall be billed by the treasurer at the same time as personal property taxes.
If your tax bill for VLF is incorrect due to a vehicle either being sold and not replaced or the vehicle was moved from the County of Rockingham during the year, be sure to contact the Commissioner of the Revenue office immediately for adjustment on the VLF.
Owners or lessees of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers who have served outside of the county in the armed services of the United States shall have a 90-day grace period, beginning on the date they are no longer serving outside the United States, in which to comply with the requirements of the vehicle license fee. This includes active duty service with the regular Armed Forces of the United States, the National Guard, or other reserve component.
