[ARCHIVED] May 25th - May 31st Declared as Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week in Virginia

Governor McAuliffe has issued a proclamation for May 25-31 as Hurricane and Flooding Preparedness Week in Virginia. This week coincides with Virginia’s Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday and with National Hurricane Preparedness Week, both of which are included in the proclamation. CERTIFICATE of RECOGNITION
By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution in the Governor of
the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

HURRICANE AND FLOODING PREPAREDNESS WEEK

WHEREAS, the National Weather Service will observe May 25-May 31, 2014, as National Hurricane Preparedness Week; and

WHEREAS, our Commonwealth is at risk of experiencing the damaging effects of coastal and inland tropical storm systems, including widespread flooding; and

WHEREAS, Virginia residents should understand how hurricane hazards such as storm surge, flooding, high winds, and tornadoes can affect their homes and communities; and

WHEREAS, Virginia residents should develop an appropriate family emergency plan and prepare for major storms by stocking water, non-perishable food, and emergency supplies, including a self-powered radio; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth observes an annual Hurricane Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday May 25-31 to facilitate Virginians’ purchasing of emergency supplies; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, and local emergency managers provide safety information and preparedness techniques, of which all Virginians should be aware before the start of hurricane and flooding season;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terence R. McAuliffe, do hereby recognize the week of May 25-31, 2014, as HURRICANE AND FLOODING PREPAREDNESS WEEK in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all of our citizens.
