Due to the increasing number of registered voters in Precinct 305, Massanetta Springs, the establishment of a new voting precinct, 307 Crossroads, is being discussed by the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, July 22, 2015. The meeting is open to the public and will take place at 3:00 PM at the Rockingham County Administration Center, 20 E Gay Street, Harrisonburg , Virginia. This change would take place beginning on November 3, 2015 during the General Election.
In an effort to limit long lines, check in delays, and potential voter frustration in upcoming elections, the Electoral Board and Voter Registrar have evaluated several different sites to establish a new precinct within District 3. Approximately half of all voters currently registered in Precinct 305, Massanetta Springs, located at Mt Pleasant Church of the Brethren, would be transitioned into the new voting precinct, 307 Crossroads, which would operate at Massanutten Presbyterian Church, 50 Indian Trail Rd, Penn Laird, Virginia. As of May 2015 there were 4,489 registered voters in Precinct 305, Massanetta Springs. As one can imagine, it becomes more difficult to manage a precinct when registration numbers reach this threshold. There was a 70% voter turnout in this precinct during the 2012 Presidential Election. If those figures remain true for the 2016 Presidential Election, over 3,100 voters could turn out to cast their vote at this facility. It is with these facts in mind that the Electoral Board began to explore options for splitting the 305- Massanetta Springs Precinct.
Our goal is to ensure that every voter is able to cast their ballot in a facility that adequately accommodates all voting needs. If passed, this new voting precinct would reduce line size and check in time while making the overall experience less stressful for Rockingham County Voters.
