The adult services program provides services to maximize self-sufficiency, prevent abuse, neglect, exploitation, inappropriate institutionalization, and assist with appropriate placements when needed. Services offered include supportive counseling information and referral, facilitating health care, adequate living arrangements and companion services. Services also include pre-screening for nursing home placements and community-based services to enable the adult to remain in his / her home. Initial screenings for adult living facility placements are also provided.
Adult Protective Services
Adult Protective Services investigates complaints of abuse and the provision of services for adults who are abused, neglected, or exploited. APS receives and investigates reports of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of adults over 60 years of age and of incapacitated adults over 18 years of age. This program also provides assistance to persons in need of protective services.
Employment Services Program
This program aids in employment, education and training, childcare, transportation, and other supportive services to low income working families and families receiving public assistance. The Virginia Initiative for Employment not Welfare (VIEW) is a grant program designed to encourage self-sufficiency through employment.
VIEW is a program that offers supportive services such as child care, Medicaid, and transportation are offered during this two-year period with the addition of an additional year of transitional services.
Child Protective Services
Child Protective Services investigates complaints and provides services to abused or neglected children and their families. CPS includes the receiving of reports of abuse / neglect of children from birth to 18 years of age. Social Services is responsible for determining the validity of these reports. The agency conducts investigations into the matters to determine if there is evidence to substantiate the reports. We identify the service needs for the families who are the subject of the reports and will provide service to enhance child safety and to prevent any further abuse or neglect of the children.
Foster Care and Adoption
Foster care and adoption services are provided on behalf of children in the custody of Harrisonburg Rockingham Social Services District. This service provides temporary substitute care for children who cannot safely remain in their own home. The goal of foster care is to provide a safe, secure, alternative home for children. This program provides services to enable the child to return home, if at all possible. Adoption services are provided to children, legally free for adoption, to help them become and maintain as a permanent members of a family unit.
Child Care Services
These services assist families who are either working and / or are attending school and whose children have child care needs. These services are provided to assist families to achieve economic independence through employment. TANF recipients, as well as eligible citizens employed in low-wage jobs, can receive childcare assistance through approved providers.
